The Kosher Scotland Pesach Trip was a great experience for our family. Adam delivered on what he advertised. He and his team were professional and organized. While there were some hiccups as to be expected, issues were remedied for the most part.
The Hotel:
Overall a good choice for the program. Loved- the connecting rooms for my family. The full takeover of the Hotel. The safe vibe. The gym and pool were amazing for the kids which we used almost daily. The surrounding scenery and countryside was beautiful. Could be better- the Hotel is in need of maintenance. the pipes in one of our bathrooms did not smell great and the shower had trouble draining. Also while there was daily room cleaning, they really just made the beds and changed the towels. Vacuuming and sanitizing surfaces would have been nice- that goes for the whole hotel not just individual rooms. Also the rooms we had did not have ANY shelving or drawers and living out of a suitcase for 11 days was not comfortable. The staff were beyond patient and kind. Shout out to Cillian and Callum as well as Laura.
The programming:
Loved the trips. Scotland is a stunning country everything we did and everywhere we went was magical. The tour guides were kind and knowledgeable. As some of the drives were three hours I would have liked more history and sharing along the way with anecdotes and history as we drove through various areas. The tour guides really mostly sat on the bus until we got to the destination. While they were really nice and happy to answer questions when asked. I think it would be much more engaging for them to have prepared some facts to share every few miles or so. One of the trips to Edinburgh specifically had some hiccups. We were told to arrive for our tour as the second group. We were waiting as told outside the castle for about 40 min. But when we showed up along with another family from the program at the designated time we were told some of us were supposed to be at the previous time and that they could not take us on the tour. It was frustrating because we had followed the directions of the staff and otherwise would have happily shown up for the first tour and we specifically had paid for the castle tour as an add on, it also happened to be the coldest day and was sleeting, and the tour guide (not from the program) was particularly rude. We were not reimbursed.
On chag there were various speeches and talks. The first chag there were two walking tours, I would have appreciated more walking tours during the second days.
The Food:
The food was enough and no one went hungry. As a family with allergies there were some difficulties although our servers Cillian and Callum were always happy to check ingredients and when possible bring alternatives etc. Breakfast was the most challenging as my son is dairy egg and gluten free. Although objectively breakfast had a good assortment for most other people. We did not particularly enjoy the flavoring on alot of the food, or lack thereof. I do not know if this is cultural as we are from California, But I found everything pretty bland aside from a few dishes. There was a lack of spices used for the most part although randomly one meal would contain alot of rosemary for example. I do not believe I saw garlic in any food. I have not run a program and therefore acknowledge I do not understand what it takes, however as a cook who hosts many people frequently, that are easy additions to meals that you can make in bulk to make a meal feel more rounded particularly in the vegetable/dip arena. Beet salad, carrot salad, eggplant salads/dips, matbucha, olives, etc these can be made in bulk, stored for multiple days and are flavorful. Aside from one salad one night, the remainder of the fresh salads were either undressed or overly dressed with store bought dressings. Again this can be cultural, but dressings are so easy to make and can last in the fridge and counter depending on ingredients. There was a lack of acid (lemon, red wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, lime etc) in the food. we were constantly asking for lemons. Lastly we found out on the first night of pesach that there were no nuts at the program. This had not been communicated and I would have brought with me as a healthy snack for the kids. There was also a lack of dried fruit aside from dried mango on occasion. The tea room was always stocked with candies chocolate and chips and drinks. I personally would have loved to see fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the day like a veggie platter for kids and adults to enjoy in between meals. Kid dinners during chag almost always ran out and for the most part did not include salad of vegetables. The soups at chag lunches was most appreciated. Lastly to go lunches for the trips....Most of the trips were 2-3 hours each way that meant we were away from about 9 until 6 pm most days. A lunch with a small salad and 6 bite pieces of chicken with chips and an apple is not enough to sustain for 9 hours. I think for the longer trips the program could have arranged to send bulk food under the bus or at least bulk veggies and fruits to be offered throughout the day. Nuts would have been helpful here as well. Alternately a more robust packed lunch.
Overall this was a wonderful wonderful trip. Our family had a great time. Thank you!
